Tiree Images > Other Collections > Balephetrish
Balephetrish (Gaelic Baile Pheadrais) lies on the north coast of the Isle of Tiree, exposed to the Atlantic Ocean. There is a hill, beach and farm of the same name. On top of the hill are an ancient hill fort and an interesting well carved out of the solid rock. Tiree Marble, which is not a marble at all but a green coccolite, was quarried at Balephetrish at several times in the past. The most recent workings were by a Belgian company around a century ago. There are other quarries at Balephetrish where stone for construction was extracted. (Geology of Tiree) Half way between Balphetrish and Vaul lies the mystical Ringing Stone.
