Sandaig Island Life Museum is a traditional Tiree thatched house and steading restored in 1992. Check out the Balemartine page for more information about the architecture. To the north of Sandaig lies The Maze beach. In 1864 a processing factory, called the Glassary, was established at Middleton by the North British Chemical Company to extract iodine from kelp. From 1800 to 1900, kelp processing was a major industry on the west coast and islands of Scotland. It closed in 1901. The impressive headland above is Ceann a' Mhara (anglised Kennavara) on the southwest coast of Tiree. Beyond the cliffs lies Balephuil and the other side of the Ceann a' Mhara can be seen from there.
